There are honest people left in the world

Well my computer if finally back home with a brand new motherboard and processor. I don’t know what either one of those things are, but my computer works. Yeah.
I have a non food related story to tell you all.

About 4 years ago my house was burglarized. Meaningless things were stolen like computers and DVD players. However non replaceable things were taken as well. Like ALL of my jewelry, jewelry that I had had all of my life..my first “diamond” ring that I got from my first love in 5th grade, my grandmothers High School graduation ring, my Graduation ring, family heirlooms pieces, pricey watches, etc. Overall about $25,000 worth of jewelry in 3 separate jewelry boxes. Not to mention, my best friend Bobbi was keeping her jewelry box at my house because her house was being remodeled and she knew it would be safe at my house. Well that was gone as well.
Today I get a letter in the mail saying someone might have found a class ring that belonged to me based on the name engraved inside. I was hesitant to call because I thought it might be a scam of some sort. but I called anyway.
A man with a heavy Southern accent picked up the phone. He said he uses a metal detector on the beach all the time and he always finds gold that people have dropped at the beach. I described my ring to him and it was a match! He said he has had the ring in his possession for a couple of years but has never found a name match. I just recently added my maiden name to my facebook account. He said he was looking through some scrap gold he has found over the years and he decided to see if he could locate the name on the ring again. He went to Facebook, typed in the name on the inside of the ring again and FOUND ME!
Pretty darn cool huh?
How do you repay someone for such kindness?

  1. What an amazing story!! I wouldn’t even know where to begin thanking this kind man!

With cookies of course! Or some other baked thing! That is a great story!

But then there is the sinister part of me that thinks he is the burglar. I know I suck.

  3. It’s so amazing how God’s goodness works through the people He uses… I’m so thrilled you found one of your treasured possessions… glad you’re back, Les!!! 🙂

  4. Wow, what an incredibly kind person to actually put so much of his time into trying to find the owner of the ring. It’s amazing you got it back!

Sorry to hear about your house being burglarized a few years back. I imagine it’s not just the fact that your material possessions are stolen, but that somebody was in your home, going through your personal life and taking what they wanted. At least you and your family are okay.

  5. how does one repay someone, whose kindness really can’t be set in monetary standards?

    with one’s own priceless gratitude.

  6. Wow, that is really an amazing story! How cool for you and what a great person to actually try to find the owner!

  7. How cool is that? And how’d it end up on a beach?

Food, it’s gotta be food. No really, people like that don’t usually expect to be paid.

  12. Yay, what a sweet man!

  13. Clumbsy Cookie says:

That is very cool – Face book has so many benefits.. That to be honest would not have been one that I would have thought!! So glad you got one of your treasures back!!

  17. Leslie, I read your entry and my first thought was COOKIES! Then I got to your comment page and saw that Cathy at Noble Pig had the same thought!

I’m so glad you got your ring back – and the your computer is running again!!!

  18. I like noble pigs idea of thanking.

I left my moms graduation ring at a gas station bathroom sink and came back for it and it was gone. I like your story better. I always thought those metal detectors were so geeky but this makes them sort of cool now.

I have an award for you my dear.

  19. Yep. A big burly voiced man from the South would probably enjoy something sweet to eat. Or maybe batteries for his doohickey. Welcome back girl, your big day approacheth!

  20. TeeThymeDiva says:

That’s a story for ya!! Sorry to hear about the burglary 4 years ago.

  21. Glad you are back! Sorry your things got stolen, but what a great story! I am so happy you got your ring back!

  22. That is amazing! Darn those burglars though, that really sucks! But to get one thing back, that would be the one to get, right?

  23. I am someone who has had my high school class ring stolen (and not found), and I also have posession of someone else’s class ring and have not had luck finding the person. I’ll have to try the facebook idea!

  24. How very cool is that, you would never think anything like that would ever happen.

  25. When I read stories like this, I’m convinced there’s more good than bad in the world.

  26. What a great story. I think some sort of baked good would do the thank you trick. But that is awesome that he kept looking.

  27. Man what a crazy story! That’s so awesome that you got it back though…sometimes things just work out!

By the way…I gave you some awards on my blog!!! :o)

  28. Wow. I have goose bumps! I just LOVE nice people, I really do.

  29. I’m so tickled you got your class ring back.

We have a similar story, only in reverse 🙂
We (dh and I) have stumbled upon many items in the past, such as jewelry, a woman’s purse at a busy mall, on Christmas Eve. And even a wallet at a local park, with money, credit cards and license intact.
The owners of the purse and wallet being the easiest to track down, obviously.

And Leslie, you would be surprised at the number of people who will not even so much as utter a simple ‘thank you’ for their return.

So, it is stories such as yours, that restores my faith.

  30. That’s so cool that he tracked you down. But what a bummer about all of your jewelry, robbers suck.

  31. That is fantastic! This is probably one of the best blog posts, not food related, that I have read in a very long time. How sweet. Isn’t it amazing sometimes that nice people still exist in this world, ha ha? I know, I’m bad but I am still shocked by people.

  32. how awesome is that?!

  33. I’m so sorry to hear about the robbery! That was very sweet of that guy to contact you, oh the wonders of internet! Maybe you should send him some of those tasty looking DB cookies you just made :).

  34. Bake him a cake or brownies or cookies or cupcakes or all of the above.

Once I called fatwitch bakery to have them deliver brownies to a friend of mine. She loved the brownies.

Good people are out there. Comforting isn’t it?

  35. That is an amazing story! See, just goes to sure you that there are decent people in the world.

Since he likes finding hidden treasures, I would bake him a cake with a little treasure tucked inside to thank him.
